Beautiful Blessings On The Trail & Beyond

We all know life gets busy with family, work, daily tasks, and so much more. However, there are instances and times where life forces us to recognize the good and appreciate the journey. Recently, I experienced one such time...

I took some time to reflect on the blessings and challenges of owning and running this business of 14 years. Those ups and downs have led us to this point in time along the journey and I can't help but share the beautiful blessings on the trail and beyond.

To give you some back story, a couple of weeks ago I visited three active trail builds that were all in the Sonoma/Marin area. This is a rare occurrence in our business to have jobs relatively close to one another. Each project had its unique characteristics:

  • One build was through hard rock in Sonoma.

  • Another we hand built with bridges in Marin County.

  • And the final trail was also in Marin, but it was cut into steep terrain .

Each job was being run exceptionally well by our expert trail builders who have to make numerous major and minor decisions daily. These decisions all impact the overall user experience. We have to think about the location and impact to the surrounding landscape including tree, and rock management. It is very important to us that our trails blend seamlessly with the land and work with it to flow. We never want to disturb or push a trail where it does not belong. It is decisions like these that are the practical part of our job and when they blend with the art of the build, it is magic.

After experiencing these three trails and witnessing our trail builders in their element, it hit me how blessed I am to be able to work with such extraordinary and talented people. That feeling was even further confirmed and sunk deep into my soul when we were able to end the day, with our whole crew sharing a meal together.

We had dinner at Lumas restaurant in Petaluma. It is a wonderful place and we would recommend it to anyone in the area.

As we were eating, chatting, laughing and catching up with each other's families, a deep sense of gratitude overwhelmed me. We simply have fantastic people working with us and I appreciate all their time, talent, energy, and effort they give to every client we serve.

Not to mention, we got to meet seven month old Flurry, our first Trailscape baby! She effervesces with joy and draws a grin on my face that starts in my chest.

To make this experience even more wonderful, we received a note from a client in wine country who had a tough rocky job:

“Please know how much this project is exceeding my expectations; every time I climb that hill, it’s like an emotional journey, and I’m so blown away by the quality of the trail, and the beautiful views that you are unlocking! Everything is so thoughtfully done, in harmony with the landscape. Thank you for the great work!” -JK

Wow. I am so blessed working in a field that I love with caring, responsible people. Our clients are thoughtful and share the love of their trail in ways that make our passion grow even deeper.

Should you happen to have a trail, please know we would love to hear your stories. Maybe your story involves grand children who want to play, explore, and discover nature? Or a grown child who enjoys coming home to the 'ol stomping grounds? Or potentially it's an escape from the hustle and bustle? Maybe it's the exercise that simply doesn't feel like work because every moment is enjoyed? Or the peace that accompanies you each time? Whatever your story, feeling or experience is, you can share it with us here.

Gold ring on finger

In fact, let me share a very personal story. I proposed to my wife 12 years ago. It was twilight and we were on a trail overlooking the American River. Rather than getting down on one knee with a traditional ring from the store, I presented her with a nugget of raw gold and three diamonds. You see, she is an artist. I knew that creating her own design would be a lifelong memory for us both. Her design encompassed a honeycomb and a bee.

This all boils down to the honor I feel to be serving God and his people through this amazing business.
